Health benefits of Aronia berries:

Possible health benefits of Aronia berries include:

  1. Help reduce the risk of cancer:
    • Studies have shown that Aronia berries have the strongest potential of reducing cancer risk.
    • The antioxidants present in the berry, especially anthocyanins, help stop colon cancer cells from proliferating and growing, thereby reducing their growth by up to 60 percent.
    • When the extracts are taken by women with breast cancer, it reduces oxidative stress on the body and reduces the generation of free radicals into the blood.
  2. Prevent or reduce the risk of chronic diseases:
    • They are high in polyphenol antioxidants, which are known to maintain good health and have the potent ability to prevent chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.
  3. Help lower blood pressure:
    • Aronia extracts have been shown to relax the tissue on the walls of blood vessels and help improve blood flow, thereby reducing the possibility of developing cardiovascular diseases.
    • Many cardiovascular diseases reduce the ability of the blood vessels to relax, resulting in the hardening of arterial walls. They help reduce blood pressure and may help combat high blood pressure in the arteries.
  4. Improve heart health:
    • Rich in antioxidants, Aronia berries help lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol and improve heart function.
    • Intake of Aronia berry juice, about 250 mL daily, decreases the bad cholesterol levels (low-density lipoprotein).
  5. Help manage diabetes:
    • Aronia berries, as well as their juice and extract, are widely consumed to manage diabetes.
    • Studies suggest that these berries can improve glucose metabolism and regulate sugar levels by reducing insulin resistance.
  6. Improve Immune function:
    • Aronia berries possess immunomodulatory properties that can support and strengthen the immune system.
    • Extracts from the berries have been shown to help prevent harmful bacterial activity by decreasing its protective biofilm production and viral diseases.
    • The berry extract exhibited strong antibacterial activity against harmful bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus.
    • Ellagic acid and myricetin in Aronia berry extract may protect against the influenza virus.
  7. Reduce the risk of urinary tract infections:
    • Studies show a strong reduction in urinary tract infections in patients who had Aronia berry juice regularly.
    • The berries inhibit the body’s release of inflammatory substances, such as cytokines and interleukins, and reduce the inflammatory responses.

Changes Are Coming

2025 was quite a year at our house. Berries in two fields bloomed beautifully, then fell off in early June. We believe cold, wet weather contributed to the “drop”. We are thankful we have had so many in the freezer!

We have been working to acquaint folks with Aronia’s health benefits for years. This year, Woody and I have decided to do a better job with the blog, Facebook and the website (MyAroniaBerry.com) to let folks know what is going on.

After pruning two fields last year, it’s time to do the other two this winter. It’s a messy, scary process, but the bushes have gotten so big, production has suffered. Last year we cut down two of our largest fields with a diamond deck on the front of a skid loader (thanks Jake!). It kind of looks like a war zone after cutting the bushes down. There is wood debris everywhere and the splintered bushes look terrible. But these hardy perennial bushes popped back. They are between 2-3′ tall after the growing season. Ordinarily it takes 2-3 years to get a full crop, but we might see a very few this year, we’ll keep you posted.

Marketing Changes

We have sold berries to local grocers, to an organic juice bar in New Jersey, to a company making “magic” juice in Missouri and to many folks who have found us locally and online. We are so grateful for all of you who have taken steps to boost your antioxidants.

For the past year we experimented selling on Ebay and Etsy in addition to MyAroniaBerry.com. After crunching numbers, Etsy’s fees have risen, we are phasing that out. So if you are looking for items, message me or visit MyAroniaBerry.com.

We always keep Aronia powder, made with the whole berries, not just leftover pulp after juicing. We also have freeze dried berries, frozen berries in bulk or single pounds. We also carry the Elderberry Immune Syrup with Aronia folks call the “Magic Juice”. We also have some juice we make for ourselves we sometimes share with others.
